Indiana Addendum Complete!
The Midwest Glacial Lakes Partnership, in cooperation with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Indiana DNR and Indiana Lakes Management Society completed an Indiana- specific addendum to a book developed by the MN Dept. of Natural Resources, Lakescaping for Wildlife and Water Quality. The addendum was produced by DJ Case and Associates, with topics including:
  • Indiana plant list, including information such as habitat, sun exposure, height, bloom color/time, invasive characteristics, wildlife benefit, and seasonal interest, with selected photographs.
  • Case studies and/or individual examples of lakescaping in Indiana across a range of aesthetics from more manicured to more natural designs, habitat types, water level regimes, wave exposures, and lakebed morphometries.
  • Cost estimates for shoreline stabilization for a range of bioengineering options from stone revetments to revegetation, updated to 2008 dollars from resources reasonably available to Indiana land managers.
  • Applicable Indiana lakeshore rules and regulations, including regulations affecting shoreline construction and examples of local ordinances or building codes that may facilitate or impede natural lakescaping.

The addendum will be a valuable tool for Indiana lake conservationists. Click here to view the addendum.

Grant Success!

A group of five Midwest fish habitat partnerships, including the Midwest Glacial Lakes Partnership, was awarded a multi-state conservation grant in September. The grant provides nearly $400,000 over two years for the partnerships-in part-to develop a "hub of support services" in science, GIS technology, planning, outreach and coordination. Other activities funded by the grant include individual assessments for each partnership as well as a regional fish habitat partnership website. This collaborative approach is being considered as a model for other regions of the U.S. to meet the needs of fish habitat partnerships in a cost-effective manner. A Plan to Move Forward

On September 30, 2009, the Midwest Glacial Lakes Partnership delivered a MGLP-steering committee approved strategic plan to the National Fish Habitat Board (Board). This step marks the completion of a requirement of the Board when MGLP's application for partnership recognition in March, 2009 was approved. While this is an approved plan, it should be noted that it is a living document that will be reviewed as new information becomes available, such as when the partnership's resource assessment is completed in 2010. NFHAP funds to MGLP!

The Midwest Glacial Lakes Partnership (MGLP) submitted three projects to the National Fish Habitat Board for funding consideration under the National Fish Habitat Action Plan. As a recognized fish habitat partnership, MGLP is eligible for project funding and may receive up to $90,000 for projects next year. Projects submitted include
  • Lakeshed delineations for eastern North Dakota. This work is needed for the MGLP assessment.
  • Regional website for shoreland habitat restoration, including tools to customize local plans.
  • Lakescaping demonstrations projects in South Dakota.
For more information on these projects, please contact Pat Rivers at 218-327-4306.

MGLP is recognized as a Fish Habitat Partnership

National Fish Habitat Award for Outreach and Education goes to WI!

Washington, DC) - A group of the nation's leading authorities on aquatic conservation, the National Fish Habitat Board, will honor two exceptional organizations and two individual champions in aquatic resource conservation at the Second Annual National Fish Habitat Awards ceremony on April 27, 2009 at the Jim Range National Casting Call hosted by the American Fly Fishing Trade Association. The award for Outreach and Education goes to the Wisconsin Lake Leaders Institute, an organization that "proactively develops a pool of committed and prepared leaders to assume leadership roles in Wisconsin Association of Lakes, other statewide committees, county-wide associations of lakes and watershed teams." Wisconsin Lake Leaders Institute is designed to assist in developing and enhancing both technical and people skills of citizen leaders. The Institute also seeks to develop networks to share experiences and to encourage participants to learn from each other. To read more on the LLI and other award recipients, click here
